CHICAGO, Oct. 30.β€”A man who registered on the steamer Alabama Tuesday night as John Snyder, had disappeared when the ship reached Muskegon, Mich., leaving letters in a locked suitcase. Her name was given in the letter as Mrs. Emily Snyder, 13101 Loretto avenue, Detroit. D. A. Conferees Forced To Flee. Who killed him and why has not been determined. His slayer escaped across housetops. Peace negotiations were in progress at Hip Sing headquarters in Pell street. Charlie King, chief of the On Leongs, had just presented to the negotiators his Tong's demand for $50,000 indemnity and other concessions aimed at curbing the business activities of Hip Sing merchants in Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Washington and New York Ong Foon, leader of the Hip Sings, had demurred at the terms, but professed a willingness to arbitrate. The 14-day armistice had been agreed upon when the shots sent the arbitrators scampering to the "dugout" safety of the nearest basement laundry. Inspector Takes Charge Of Bank. New York, Oct. 30.β€”A two-week armistice was agreed upon by representatives of warring Chinese Tongs tonight at the close of a 24-hour conference aimed at curbing the business activities of Hip Sing merchants in Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Washington and New York. Halted By Shots. The Chinese consul-general, Federal officials from Washington, Oriental merchants from distant cities and local Tong leaders had drawn up the general armistice and were about to sign it when a succession of shots rattled the windows of the room in Chinatown where they deliberated. Gee Ling, Hip Sing Tongsman, died in a neighboring doorway. He had taken advantage of the rumored peace to venture into Doyer street, stronghold of the On Leong Tong, and was shot down. Ong Foon, leader of the Hip Sings, had demurred at the terms, but professed a willingness to arbitrate. The 14-day armistice had been agreed upon when the shots sent the arbitrators scampering to the "dugout" safety of the nearest basement laundry. Inspector Takes Charge Of Bank.
