BANK DEPOSITORS ARE ASSESSED The news coming officially from Washington relative to the plan to levy an assessment of 100 per cent on the par value of each share of stock held by shareholders of the First National Bank of Midland Park was a shock to many, although this had been discussed from time to time It was not believed it would actually occur. This will affect eighty-two stockholders who reside in the borough and in nearby municipalities, and that it will seriously affect some is certain. John J. Kelly who has been in charge of the bank as for the past few weeks, stated that he had received this order from J. F T. O'Conner, comptroller of the currency at Washington after an official and detailed statement had been sent him which satisfied him that the assets of the bank were not sufficient to pay its liabilities in full and that therefore it was necessary to levy this assessment against the stockholders. Stockholders have been informed that assessments are due and payable Feb. 13. 1934. but they were further informed that an ex. tension would be given to anyone of them who pays twenty per cent. of his liability under the assessment on or before that date and who gives written agreement satisfactorily guaranteed to pay this with an additional twentyfive per cent on or before March 13: a third on or before April 13 and the remainder on or before May 13, 1934 Failing to keep this agreement will give Mr. Kelly the right to start suit after Feb. 13, against any stockholder who omits payment.
