Description

Multiple contemporary AP syndicated reports (dated 1930-01-30) state the Commercial Bank of St. Augustine failed to open its doors and posted a notice signed by President C. Gilbert that the bank has suspended business ... and placed itself in the hands of the State Banking Department. Articles report a suspension (state banking department involved) but do not mention a prior depositor run, receivership, or permanent closing. No explicit reopening or receivership is reported in these clippings; I classify as suspension_reopening because the wording indicates a protective suspension under state supervision (commonly temporary) and there is no evidence of permanent closure or receiver appointment in the provided articles.

FARM BOARD WON'T BUY ANY COMMODITIES menting on reports from New Orleans to the effect that cotton prices have declined $2 a bale there as a result of a statement by him to the effect that the federal farm board will not buy cotton at prices higher than the market, Chairman Legge said today that the board was not going to buy cotton or any other commodity at any price. "Reports of what the board con templates doing," Legge said, "evidently have been garbled. "There has been no change whatever in the board's cotton loan policy. The board will continue to make supplemental commodity advances to the cotton co-operative associations on the cotton loan value basis announced October 21, 1929, and has no intention of calling loans already made to these associations.' Legge explained that it was the American Cotton Co-Operative Association that conducted market operations and not the federal farm board. Florida Bank Fails.
