Description

Multiple contemporary newspapers (cited Augusta Despatch) report that the Bank of Augusta suspended payments on Oct 17, 1857 along with other Augusta banks. The suspension is described as a coordinated, voluntary action at the solicitation of the business community to cope with the commercial depression and aid marketing of produce; there is no mention of depositor runs or permanent closure in the provided articles, so I classify this as a suspension (no run) likely temporary (suspension_reopening). Bank corporate form is not specified in the texts, so bank_type is unknown.
