News of the Week. Iowa orchards suffered enormous damage during the recent storm. The First Presbyterian Church, Chicago, was damaged by fire Sunday to the extent of about $4000. An incendiary fire Sunday destroyed 21 11 store buildings and five dwellings at Shaws, Miss. ;loss about $75, partially insured. Be caresul of whom you entertain over night, as smallpox prevails at Ironton, Ohio; Pittsburg, Penna., and Pensacola, Florida. The Westham Granite Company, owning large quarries in Chesterfield county, Virginia, has made an assignment. Liabilities, $89,000. The Henry County Bank, at Clinton, Missouri, has suspended payments. The deposits are about $125, 000, and bills payable about $20,000. The funded debt of the railways of Pennsylvania is $897 086,938, which, with a capital stock and floating debts. makes a total capitalization of $2,007,191,535. Daniel Ryan, aged 6 years, and William and Josephine Burk, aged 7 and 11 respectively, were drowned in the Naugatuok river, at Thomaston, Conn., on Saturday, by the breaking of the ice. A fire in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Saturday destroyed the wholesale grocery of B. H. Flaspoller & Son, and the store of the J. C. Morris Co., dealers in wooden and willow ware. Loss, $155,000. A Santa Fe train was wrecked 25 miles north of Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday night, by miscreants. who placed obstruetions on the tracks. Two of the trainmen were killed and another badly scalded. During a fight in New York city on Saturday night Giuseppe Dsario shot and killed Francisco Garlula and fatally wounded his brother James Garinla. The row started in a saloon over a game of cards. According to a Chicago despatch the Standard Oil Company and the Rockefellers have bought a large tract of land in the Calumet river region of South Chicago and will build the largest steel plant in the country. Because their demand for food and shelter was not complied with, two tramps, on Saturday night, set fire to and destroyed the home of Sarah and Mary Leech, near Shelbyville, Ind. Mary Leech was probably fatally burned. Sophia Lawrence, aged 9: Sarah Lawrence. aged 40, and a lodger, named Sawyer, all colored people, were found dead in their house, in Roxbury, Mass., on Saturday. They had been asphyxiated by gas from a leaky pipe. United States Secret Service detectives in New York on Saturday night arrested Charles Poppas, a resturant keeper, and Annie Kranis, on a charge of making spurious coin. Dies, moulds and a furnace for melting metal were seized. The United States District Attorney at Des Moines, Iowa. on Saturday swore out warrants for the Commandant and Trustees of the Iowa Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown. charging them with violating Federal laws by retaining liens on pensions. George Evans and Charles Pink were killed by negroes near Sugar Hill, Perry county, Tenn., on Thursday of last week; while endeavoring to check a race riot which was in progress. The murders have intensified the trouble and further bloodshed is probable. An opinion of importance to Eastern investors was handed down by the Kansas Supreme Court. in Topeka, on Saturday. It was in effect that the Kansas law does not authorize the assessment of judgments rendered by the State Courts in favor of citizens of other States. A Kansas City despatch says that the Omaha, St. Joseph and Kansas City packers have determined to form a company and purchase salt mines in Kansas, and hereafter produce all the rock salt that may be needed in the packing business of the three cities. County treasurer W. N. Coe was arrested at Dallas, Tex., on Saturday night on a grand jury indictment charging him with embezzling $5695 of Dallas county funds. Coe claims to have been robbed in his office by two men at midnight last Sunday night and to have been shot in the back of his head. An investigation of the work of the turnpike raiders in Kentucky shows that 1500 miles owned by corporations have practically been confiscated and are being travelled free of toll. It is estimated that the destruction of tollgates in the Blue Grass region has aflected $4,000,000 worth of property. It is said that Senator Faulkner will resign his seat as United States Senator this winter 80 that he can accept a very lucrative offer as attorney for a New York corporation. Senator Faulkner said Sunday night in reference to the rumor that in view of political conditions in his State he will not resign until the expiration of his term
