SALES TAX BRINGS DEMAND FOR PENNY Several Cities Report Banks Having Hard Time Supplying Requests NOT SO HEAVY HERE CALLS FOR ONE-CENT PIECE REVISES WAR TIME NICKEL WISECRACK During the last World War, when prices were high and business was booming, the "wisecrackers" frequently referred humorously to the fact that the old-time nickel had lost its value and that nothing less than a dime was legal tender in buying anything. Now that those "luscious" days are only a matter of memory, not only has the nickel again found its rightful place as a medium of exchange but even the lowly penny is having its inning, as a result of the establishment of the one per cent sales tax in Missouri, payment of which has been shifted from the merchants to the consumer. Officers of the Callaway Bank in Fulton declare that there has been some increase in the demand for pennies by merchants and others but that it has not been on the level reported by some of the other cities of this section of the state. The Chillicothe Tribune tells of the heavy "run" on the bank there for pennies in the following story: "Since the debut of the 'milk bottle cap' sales tax tokens a week ago, Tuesday, the Citizens' National Bank has been doing an enormous 'penny' business.

The Chillicothe Tribune tells of the heavy "run" on the bank there for pennies in the following story: "Since the debut of the 'milk bottle cap' sales tax tokens a week ago, Tuesday, the Citizens' National Bank has been doing an enormous 'penny' business. "An astonishing number of fathers have sworn off giving their adored offspring all the pennies now. Gotta buy bottle caps with those extra pennies. The penny Christmas fund, Junior's bicycle fund and Anne's fund for a Shirley Temple doll are all suffering dreadfully because of the new tax system. "The bank has hardly been able to keep enough pennies for the demand of business. A week ago on Saturday there was approximately $125 in pennies for the day's business and an additional $100 in pennies was ordered. Out of that many only about $20 remained for Tuesday and an order will be sent tonight for a hundred dollars worth for this coming Saturday, it was announced at the bank today. "Saturday is noticeable the 'heaviest' penny day at the bank, but the increase has been marked on any day. "The last lot of $100 in pennies was direct from the mint, which accounts for all those bright and shining new 1935 pennies in circulation the last few days."
