Two More Banks in Missouri Suspend JEFFERSON CITY (Mo.), Aug. 1.—(International News Service.)—Two more State banks closed their doors in Missouri today, bringing the total of State bank suspensions since January 1, 1924, to 31. The banks closed today were the Farmers' Bank of Calla, Macon county, Missouri, with total deposits of $104,000, and the Hickory County Bank of Wheatland, with deposits of $50,000. NICKEL PLATE MERGER. NEW YORK, Aug. 1.—(AP)—Conferences between the Van Sweringens of Cleveland and bankers for the Erie, Pere Marquette and other railroads which the former plan to consolidate with their greater "Nickle Plate" system, proceeded today, with indications that definite progress toward an exchange of securities would not be reached until next week. Bankers participating in the conferences have been pledged to secrecy regarding the negotiations, but have intimated that discussions so far have merely dealt with the positions which the roads will occupy in the enlarged "Nickel Plate" line. No announcement regarding the deal is expected until definite offers are submitted to stockholders of the various roads to be included in the combine. GEN. EXPLOSIVES ABSORBED. JOPLIN (Mo.), August 1.—George N. Spiva, chairman of the board of directors of the General Explosives Company, today announced the sale of the corporation's property to the du Pont Powder Company. The purchase price was not announced. The General Explosives Company has offices in eight cities, including Chicago, Birmingham, Denver, St. Louis and Miami, Fla., and is incorporated for $1,000,000.
