WHISPERS OF THE WIRE. Bits of Telegraphic News From all Sections of The Globe. A run was commenced on the Lowell (Mass.) Institution for Savings yesterday morning, caused by a rumor that the bank is not safe. The bank paid all demands promptly. The alarm is looked upon as entirely needless, the bank being considered the soundest in the State. Australian influenza, which is similar to grippe, has made its appearance in California. In Oakland, Alameda and other towns hundreds are afflicted and many deaths are resulting from the disease. By an explosion of hot metal at the Lucy furnace, Pittsburg, Pa., yesterday, Joseph Mendetto and Frank Gerrado were fatally and three others seriously burned.

It will be the shortest line to the City of Mexico by nearly 800 miles, and will open one of the finest sections of country on the continent.
