MONTANA SQUIBS Powell county commissioners are expending considerable on the roads in the northern end of the county and in the vicinity of Elliston. The jury acquitted in the case at Dillon of the state against John Halligan Sr., and his nephew, John Halligan Jr., who were charged with grand larceny of a steer. The supreme court has affirmed the judgment of the district court of Silver Bow which granted a new trial in the suit of Thomas Fadden against Butte Miners' union No. 1. Following the death of Dennis Herlihy at Butte Saturday as the result of a stab wound received in a wrestling match in his saloon, Dan Connell was arrested and charged with murder. In a fire which completely destroyed his cabin on Highwood creek, Ben McMann, a pioneer of Northern Montana, lost his life recently. McMann was 75 years of age and had a habit of smoking while in bed and it is believed that the fire was started in this manner. In the case of the state versus Clarence A. Smith on the charge of libel for publishing an article in the Butte Socialist October 17, in which Otto Pufahl of Butte was called a "public degenerate from chronic alcoholism," was submitted to the jury at Bozeman Monday. The recording of a deed in the office of the county clerk and recorder at Kalispell Saturday revealed that Joseph A. Miller, believed to have been drowned in the Flathead river about September 1, or to have wandered away while mentally unbalanced, to be at Spirit Lake, Idaho. Through loaning too much money to the Farmers' Equity Elevator company at Windham and not being able to secure the cash in an emergency, the State bank of that place has been forced to close. This, it is said, will be but temporary, as the assets are in excess of all liabilities. The State Savings bank of Butte, which closed its doors August 15, will pay its first dividend of 12 per cent to creditors on and after December 21. Receiver F. D. Williams stated that upon taking possession of the bank $68,639 came into his hands and that up to December 5 he had collected $254,161, making a total cash receipt of $322,800. The city of Philipsburg was practically without water supply Saturday, owing to some obstruction in the flume at a point near the source of the supply at the head of Little Boulder creek, east of Granite. As a result the schools in the city were closed for lack of water, and water even for domestic purposes was at a premium. The report of J. J. Ryan, clerk of the state board of equalization, shows that the taxable wealth of Montana increased this year over 1913 $429,454,642. The biggest increase was in the number of acres of land assessed, this growing from 22,541,034 acres in 1913 to 25,236,655 this year. The total assessed wealth of the state this year is $412,361,919, and last year it was $362,807,277. The Montana Fire Insurance Agents' association was organized recently, with W. H. Smead of Missoula as president; J. W. Thomas of Butte, as vice president and W. B. Burkett of Bozeman, secretary. The association will meet in Helena on Jan. 11 and the legislative committee will meet the same day and make its report to the association. The purpose of the organization is the betterment of insurance conditions in the state. The following have been appointed railway mail clerks in this state: J. H. Hancock, Ballantine; J. J. Blanche Hammons has been appointed postmistress at Camas, and Nellie Guilbault, postmistress at Marysville. Woman suffrage carried in Montana by a majority of 3714, according to the official canvas. The vote on the various measures submitted to the voters was as follows: Kiley boxing law—For, 34,440; against, 42,581. Law repealed by majority of 8141.
