The Royal Neighbors initiated five new members last evening. Lunch was served by Misses Ella and Alma Erickson and a social hour followed the initiation ceremony. Pocket billiard tables at the Hanson barber shop have recently been improved with new cloths and balls. P. O. believes in giving good service—even to the extent of cleaning the stovepipes on Wednes to keep his customers from suffocating. Considerable trouble has been caused of late by leakage in the old service pipes connecting with the village water mains. Rust is beginning to eat thru the pipes and as no surface cut-offs were installed in the old days the entire system has to be shut off at the supply tank until the pipes are dug up and repaired. The Wells National Bank closed its doors Wednesday evening following a run on the bank by depositors. The closing down is reported to be only temporary. The trouble followed the closing of the First National at Wells and the recent and sudden death of L. N. Olds, active head of the Wells National. Wells is now without a bank. Quite a number of town people joined with the neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Nelson in giving a farewell reception for the latter at their home near town which they will soon leave for their new home in Redwood Falls. It was a surprise affair planned by friends to honor Mr. and Mrs. Nelson on the eve of their departure from the locality where they have lived so long and where so many friendships have been formed. A pleasant social time was enjoyed, lunch served and best wishes expressed for the happiness and success of the family in their new location. A gift was presented carrying the friendly sentiments of the guests.

Down Yesterday Evelyn Knutson of South Broadway who has been recuperating from a very serious spinal operation is getting along very nicely at present. The commencement exercises took place Thursday night, May 20th, at the First Lutheran church, Fullerton avenue and Ballou street, Chicago. Miss Prdsater's mother, Mrs. A. Rodsater, of Manchester and her brother. Irwin, who is now attending high school in Albert Lea, spent last week in Chicago and were present at the commencement program. Miss Rodsater will return to Albert Lea with her mother and brother this week, to spend a two weeks' vacation. At the end of her visit here, she will return to Chicago to continue her duties at the hospital. Calcium Chloride-In an effort to lay the heavy and dusty roads between the Twin Cities and Rochester, calclum chloride is being laid on state highways 20 and 59. The calcium chloride has already been placed on the roads leading out of St. Paul as far south as Hader and has settled the usually dusty roads, solving the problem satisfactorily. The state road contract is the first experiment in this part of the state, but has been worked out favorably in different towns and cities, including Eyota, Lake City and Wabasha. Eyota last year placed calcium chloride on the streets and reported favorably or it. Lake City and Wabasha used it on roads near the towns. The highway office reported that work will start from near OronoCO the first part of next week, and will work north toward the Twin Cities and south to Rochester. Calcium chloride is a chemical compound that draws moisture from the air and keeps the roads in moist condition in even the dryest of weather. Death came to 18 persons Sunday in the whirr of airplane motors and the róar of passenger trains. Four were killed and injured in four flying accidents while 14 fatalities were recorded in three major grade crossing accidents. The most unusual of the airplane accidents occurred at Chariton, Iowa, when trapeze performer, suspended from a low flying machine at an air circus, struck and killed a performeer in an attempt to take a hat from the latter's head. Four persons met death in an automobile train collision near Westcott, Iowa. Home to Davenport-Mrs. T. J. Korn who has been visiting for the past three weeks at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs. P. P. Overgaard, returned today to her home in Davenport, Ia. She also made a trip to the Twin Cities with her sister, Alyda Overgaard, while here. In Blackmer's Court-This morning a case came up in Judge Blackmer's court which was adjourned until June twenty-fourth on the advice of County Attorney J. O. Peterson. The defendant in the case was Melvin Basness who was charged by Selmer Christianson in the township of Moscow to have unlawfully, wilfully, and wrong. fully threatened to kill and to do bodily harm and injury to the said Selmer Christianson. Penney Folks Picnic-Sixty persons, comprising employes and families of the J. C. Penney stores of Fairmont, New Ulm and Albert Lea had a picnic at Interlaken Sunday and report an unusually good time. "We had plenty to eat, a snappy ball game in which Manager Earl Haire of the Fairmont store drove home the winning score, boating, bathing and a song fest-and nobody made a speech," said R. O. Abrahamson, advertising manager of the local store. The picnic was such a success that there will be one each year. The New Ulm delegation was headed by Manager H. L. Jordan, and Albert Lea sent over Manager W. W. Stewart and employes. Visited Cousin-Oscar Erickson from Hudson, S. D., was in Albert Lea on business matters. While here hè visited his cousin, Mrs. A. For Drunkenness-Yesterday morning Frank Watson was arraigned In Judge Blackmer's court on the charge of drunkenness for which he pleaded guilty and paid the fine of ten dollars and costs. On Vacation-This morning Vernon A. Larson one of the local postmen and his brother Gilbert, Larson of the Briggs Drug company left for Lennox, Ia., where they will enjoy a week's vacation. They made the trip by car. Club Meeting-The Albert Lea, Pickerel Lake 4-H club met at the home of the President Samuel Stoner, last Friday evening, May 21. A business was held, followed by a prógram consisting of a talk by the club leader, Alton Hanson; a vocal solo-by Alfred Berglund, Jr. and jokes were told by program committee. Club and popular songs were sung. A. delightful lunch was served by the hostess. The rest of the evening was spent in playing many games. The next club meeting will be held at the home of Dr. M. L. Head, Friday afternoon, June 18. Tonsils Out Today-John Lovely of West Clark street underwent an operation for the removal of his tonsils this afternoon. In Minneapolis-Judge E. S. Hammond is spending several days in Minneapolis where he is attending to bust ness matters. From Mankato-Wilbur Taylor of the Brett store of Mankato came over to Albert Lea this morning to attend to business matters in the interests of the local store. Back From San Antonio-C Larson, Pickerel Lake township, who was called to San Antonio, Texas, on aecount of the serious illness of his daughter, Carla, returned home this morning. He left Miss Carla feeling much better. She has been suffering from a sinus in the nose. Mr. Larson says that Texas is a wonderful country but Freeborn county is plenty good enough for him. While in San Antonio he visited the Brackenridge Park gardens, said to be the finest in the world.

Mrs. Benham Made In Case Involving Assignment of Mortgage (From Mankato Free Press) Asking that an alleged assignment of interest on mortgage to Louise Benham be set aside, Mackey Thompson, receiver of the Wells National bank, has started suit federal court to collect interest from Mrs. Benham and her husband, E. Benham who is also named as defendant. According to the complaint Oleson and Oleson fell heir a $5,000 property left by their father, Lars Oleson, who died about They were to share equally and were named as joint executors, claimed. The Wells National bank was declared insolvent in 1924, and two years later Oleson signed his share of the property which had been invested real estate mortgage, to the bank. The receiver alleges that the other brothafter realizing his half of the terest in 1913, made an the other Mrs. Benham. contended he had right to do this because brothers had been made joint executors and had ready converted his own half.
