TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO HAPPENINGS OF WHITE COUNTY OF INTEREST TO HERALD READERS TODAY (OMITTED LAST WEEK) The climax of the basketball season here will be reached next Saturday night, when the Lebanon high school team plays their return game with Monticello. Lebanon having defeated Crawfordsville, the State champions, since their former game with Monticello, this becomes a game for the championship and will be intensely interesting. The Monticello team on the last half of the game at Lebanon played them very near even, making a score of 11 to 10. The home team now has a chance to play them on the home floor, and with the practice and experience acquired since the first game, and the championship in view, they will make the effort of their lives. It goes without saying that the hall will be filled to its capacity. John Day passed his fortieth anniversary as a blacksmith on St. Valentine's Day and begins to feel like he has learned the trade. He recalls very vividly the time when he left Emory Seller's school in Monon township forty years ago to commence learning the blacksmith trade with his uncle at Brookston. Seventeen years later he came to Monticello, where he has been hammering iron ever since, and judging from the substantial brick building he has erected on Main street he has not hammered in vain. He now uses both the new and old buildings, the former as a shop and the latter as a storage room for bridge iron. He has ten bridges to build this season. On Monday, Feb. 28th, Simon Snowberger south of town was the subject of two very pleasant surprises. It being his forty-third birthday, his sister in Pennsylvania planned a postal card shower. He received forty-two postal cards, a number coming from Pennsylvania, his old home and others from friends and relatives in Indiana. In the evening, at the bidding of his wife, several of the neighbors came in and enjoyed a two-course supper. He was also presented with a large Morris chair. A Washington dispatch of Tuesday announces the illness of Wm. A. Forbis. Monticello is getting a State-wide reputation for its automobile market as well as the horse market. Justice W. P. Marshall is just getting to be himself again after a three weeks siege of the grip. It was the first time he has been confined to the house over 48 hours in the last sixty years. Robert O. Friend of Racine, Wis., former superintendent of the Tippecanoe Electric and Power Co. was renewing acquaintances here Saturday. A report was current here recently that he had died of typhoid fever but he is able to refute the charge in person, though the fever gave him a hard tussle. The report of Mr. Elmer Pierpont's death at Monon last week proved to be a mistake. He and his wife have both been quite sick, and his death was reported in the excitement due to the death of his neighbor Bruce Hunt. Trustee Tam of Jackson township has decided to build an addition to the present school house at Idaville and make other improvements costing $6,000. The addition will consist of two large rooms on the north side of the building. Four Carroll county farmers bought automobiles the same week recently at Dye & Gardner's, each selecting a 40-H. P. Overland. The buyers are Art Million, Albert Holloway and Newman Viney of Yeoman and Raymond Coble of Hopedale. Ed Gardner's exhibit this week is excelling all former years in attractions, attendance and sales. He has kept a record of sales each year by days, and if the week's receipts keep up the pace set by the first two days it will be a record breaker. At Fowler the arc lights of the town were each replaced last week by four high candle power tungsten incandescent lamps. The candle power of the four lights is said to be more than that given off by the arc lamps and the amount of electricity used is less, the tungsten lamp being a more economical one than the carbon. Besides incandescents can be more easily fixed in case something goes wrong. R. L. Sutherland has resigned his position as superintendent of the Tippecanoe Electric & Power Company and will move to Indianapolis, where he will represent the "E. M. F." automobile interests. His successor here has not yet been selected. Much uneasiness was felt here Saturday by the friends of John McConnell on account of a message received by Fred Bowman requesting him to come to Mobile at once. Mr. McConnell had been reported sick and preparing to return home somewhat earlier than he expected, and it was inferred that his condition had grown suddenly worse. Fred left here for Mobile Saturday evening, and a telegram from him Tuesday morning announced Mr. McConnell "O. K." and expecting to reach here Wednesday noon.
