News in Brief Nineteen high school seniors from Buda, III., township school will pay an educational visit to Davenport next Monday afternoon, when they will visit industrial plants and other points of interest here. Mr and Mrs Charles Uhl. 1017 Grand court, Davenport, have received word of the birth of a son to their son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Lester J. Uhl, of Canton, O. The baby was born on its father's birthday, Jan. 21. The Fairbanks Morse Co. of Chicago and Washington is the lowest bidder on the contract for furnishing and installing platform scales for the new Davenport postoffice, it was announced by A. M. B. Rider, government construction engineer. Two divorces were granted in Scott county district court Thursday. Mrs Maxine L. Lakers, 19, was given a divorce from Joseph F. Lakers, 20, on grounds of cruelty, and Mrs Elizabeth Hartley was granted a divorce from Benjamin Hartley on the same grounds. Residents of Lincoln township have petitioned the Scott county board of supervisors to authorize oiling of a four-mile stretch of highway in the township during 1933. The road has been brought to grade and it is claimed that the highway serves a large area of the northeast part of the county. Attorneys John P. Weir and A. G. Sampson have been appointed as additional counsel in the receivership of the Northwest Davenport Savings bank. They will assist Attorney L. E. Roddewig in legal affairs of the bank receivership. The appointments were authorized today by District Judge W. W. Scott. A hearing for the purpose of acting on application of W. P. Peterson for return of three life insurance policies held in trust by the Union Savings bank is scheduled before District Judge W. R. Maines Feb. 1. Peterson has applied for recovery of the policies in the bank when the institution closed. An assigned account of $675.75 in the closed Bettendorf Savings bank will not be used as part of assets for the benefit of bank creditors, according to an order signed by Judge W. Scott in the Scott county district court. The account was receivable from the Gem Hammock & Fly Net Co. of Milwaukee and was payable to the Hansen Lumber Co. of Davenport. The court directed that the bank receiver surrender the account to the lumber concern. and is often fouled by ascending debris. Funnel clouds are sometimes obscured by rain. 'Absence of funnel clouds during the history of a tornado is explained in various ways. Opposing parallel currents contribute largely to the maintenance of the whirl, and anything which disturbs their position or velocity would tend to interrupt it and the cloud-forming processes. The whirl may also be broken up by topography. The progressive velocity of the tri-state tornado in March, 1925, is shown in that it had speed of 57 miles an hour in Missouri, 59 in Illinois and 68 in Indiana.

John Company Morton L. Marks to Liquidate Businesses Liquidation of the Morton Marks company, and the John Kelly company, two of the oldest wholesale grocery firms in Daven port was instituted today thru the supervision of the Tri-city Credit Men's association, was announced by Betty, secretary of the association, who has been named trustee for the creditors. William Heuer, Royal Neighbors Executive, Dies (Continued from First Page.) old and it was necessary for the boy to help support his mother. He secured a position as cash boy at the J. H. C. Petersen department store, Davenport, and worked there faithfully for many years. He won the confidence of his employers and maintained it through the years. The ambition of Mr. Heuer was to be a lawyer. He had little formal education, and what high school training he secured was by studying nights with a high school teacher who took up the study of law, working over his books long into the night. In 1897, he took a position as clerk with the Citizens National bank, but nine months later he received an appointment as deputy county treasurer under the late Colonel McManus. He achieved the ambition of his early days when he was admitted to practice law in 1901. His life work, however, was destined to be done in another field. Elected City Treasurer. Mr. Heuer was elected city treasurer of Davenport on the Republican ticket in 1902, and reelected in 1904. He resigned that position later in the same year to become cashier of the Union Savings bank. From 1904 until the institution closed Dec. 24, 1932, his story and the story of the Union bank were inseparable. He directed its activities for many years as cashier, and when the late F. H. Bartemeyer resigned as president to become chairman of the board in 1919 he stepped into the presidency. On Aug. 14, 1907, he was married to Miss Adelaide Buck, daughter of a pioneer Davenport automobile dealer, who survives him. Five children were born to the union. They are William Jr., and Mrs. Louise Stevens, both of Chicago; John and Edward and Anne, the latter two being twins. Other survivors are one brother, Henry Heuer, and one sister, Mrs. Louis Naeckel, both of Davenport. A brother, August, preceded him in death. Through a series of mergers, the Union grew to be one of the dominant banks of the state. The Davenport Savings bank was absorbed on Jan. 1, 1923; the Scott County Savings bank on April 1, 1926, and the First National bank on April 25, 1931. By these mergers and normal growth, the Union acquired at one time more than $25,000,000 in deposits. During the years 1917-1918 Davenport was swept by the influenza epidemic, and hospitals were crowded beyond capacity. Mr. Heuer conceived the plan of establishing an emergency hospital at Turner hall and headed the committee which set up and operated such an establishment. During this period he contracted the "flu" and it developed into pneumonia. At the time it was feared that he would die, but he conquered the disease after a long fight. Close personal friends say that "Billy" Heuer was never the same physically after that attack of pneumonia. Problems of Depression. With the arrival of the depression came troubled days in banking. The closing of the American bank in 1931 was a blow to the Union bank, for the next morning depositors began withdrawing their savings. For two days the lobby of the Union bank was packed, but the "run" was withstood. Bank officials thought their troubles were ended, but the adverse financial conditions continued and the brief open "run" on the bank was supplanted by a long silent "run." The bank closed Dec. 24, 1932, and Mr. Heuer secured a loan from the Reconstruction Finance corporation to make possible the immediate payment of 40 per cent to depositors. Since then an additional 10 per cent has been paid. Following the closing of the bank, Mr. Heuer gave his cooperation to the state banking department and the RFC in arranging for its liquidation. He was described by his friends as a man "with a broken heart." He took over the management of the still solvent securities affiliate and on July 28, 1934, accepted the position of manager of the investment department of the Royal Neighbors. Funeral services will be at 3:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the family home. Private burial will be in Oakdale cemetery. The family requests no flowers be sent.
