TEN DAY BUSINESS MORATORIUM STARTS FT. DODGE, Ia.โ€”A 10-day business moratorium was in effect here today as the community chest organization sought pledges from depositors in the Ft. Dodge National bank and in the First State Bank & Trust company. Depositors were asked to waive withdrawals for three years. Mayor C. V. Findlay ordered closed all businesses but those necessary for the necessities of life. PLYMOUTH, Vt. โ€” Calvin Coolidge, spending the summer at his ancestral homestead here where he was born, observed his 60th birthday unceremoniously yesterday, remaining indoors because of heavy rain and an attack of hay fever. The hay fever developed upon his arrival from Northampton 10 days ago and kept him abed several days last week.

BRIGHT SPOTS OVER THE NATION [By The Associated Press] Reading, Pa. โ€” One hundred seventy men, all old employes, returned to work at plants of the Reading Iron company today. Hollywood โ€” The ranks of filmdom's jobless lost 500 recruits today when Columbia studios put the men to work. The company's payroll was more than tripled. Those newly employed were carpenters, electricians, painters, prop men and truck drivers. Boston โ€” The Lowell and Nashua, N. H., plants of the Nashua Manufacturing company, blanket manufacturers, reopened today after being shut down since July 1. About 2,000 persons are employed at both plants. Hartford, Conn. โ€” Rubber factories in Naugatuck are operating double shifts, with the largest payroll in three years, the state department of labor reported today. Gadsden, Ala. โ€” Smoke spiraled from chimneys of the Gulf States Steel company today bringing tidings of renewed activity in the industry. The booming rod, wire and nail mills resumed production today and a bar mill and two blast furnaces placed in operation last week continued on a curtailed schedule. Springfield, Mo. โ€” Five hundred employes of the Oberman Manufacturing company's plants factory here will return to work Thursday morning after a six weeks layoff, it was announced today.
