COUNTY ASSIGNS CLAIM Will Be Reimbursed by State for Money in Avoca Bank. A claim for $7,573.58 held by Pottawattamie county against the Peoples Savings bank, Avoca, which recently was placed in receivership, was assigned Wednesday afternoon by the Pottawattamle county board of supervisors to State Treasurer Ray E. Johnson. The claim represents county money on deposit in the bank. As the result of the claim the county will receive refund from the state sinking fund. In turn the claim against the bank will be collected by the state treasurer and the funds redeposited in the state sinking fund, County Auditor George B. Sparks explained.

FARMER DIES SIX WEEKS AFTER DEATH TAKES WIFE Laurens, Ia.—Special: J. Peter Kern, 65, farmer northwest of Laurens, was found dead in bed by his son, Edward. Mrs. Kern died six weeks ago. Mr. Kern is survived by two daughters and four sons. The body will be taken to Grimes for burial. LIVES 61 YEARS ON ONE FARM; DEATH TAKES HER Manson, Ia.—Special: Funeral services for Mrs. John Griffith, 64, who had lived on one farm in Calhoun county 61 years, was held here. She is survived by a widower and one daughter. Closed Bank Paying Well Avoca, Ia.—Special: With some of the assets of the defunct Peoples Savings bank here being rapidly liquidated and a first dividend of 25 per cent having been declared by the receiver in charge, Arnold Blanchard, it is now believed by the examiner that he will be able to pay depositors nearly 90 per cent of their deposits. By the co-operation of the other two banks here, the Citizens Savings bank and the Avoca State bank, the receiver was able to liquidate about $140,000 during the first four months of the receivership. Dam to Save Lake Spirit Lake, Ia.—Special: Supervisor Fred Jones has been notified by Capt. W. E. Saunders, chairman of the state conservation board, that plans are being made to construct a dam at the outlet to Swan lake, north of Superior. The dam proper, as proposed, will be about 50 feet wide and three or four feet deep with side approaches of dirt, which will provide about six feet of water the year around. Swan lake is fed by several good sized springs and after once established this level will insure fish life the year around. ORANGE CITY COLLEGE TO CONDUCT $25,000 CAMPAIGN Orange City, Ia.—Special: The Northwestern junior college and academy are putting on a campaign to raise $25,000 for the schools. The addition of the junior college has greatly increased running expenses. The Reformed Church of America has promised help for the college after it has been established three years and it is the aim of those in charge of this movement to raise this amount in order to place the school on a good financial basis. The first contribution for this fund came from a citizen of Orange City, who gave $1,000 to start the campaign. Rev. J. Heemstra, president of the school, has placed it among the best small colleges in the state of Iowa, it being accredited by the state department of education and the Central Association of High Schools and Junior Colleges. SHELDON WINS FIRST IN DISTRICT SCHOOL CONTEST Sheldon, Ia.—Special: The district scholastic contest here was won by Sheldon, with representatives from Milford, Spencer, Sioux Rapids, Royal, Alton and Ireton. There were about 125 students taking part in each class, A and B. Sheldon high school won in A class, in which Hartley, Rock Rapids, Sibley and Spencer took part, by a score of 284. Sibley took second place. The contest included 14 subjects. Sheldon high placed 11 contestants for the state contest, to be held in Iowa City June 2. The rank for class B schools follows: Milford, first; Alton, second; George, third; Superior, fourth. COW TEST ASSOCIATION LAYS PLANS FOR PICNIC Orange City, Ia.—Special: The Sioux County Testing association will hold its annual field day and picnic June 5. Members and their families will meet at the home of Albert Dethmers, president of the association, east of Boyden. The program for the day will include judging contests, games and talks by Earl N. Schultz, extension dairyman, and Jack Frisbee, state inspector. The herds of Gerrit Slothouwer and C. A. De Valois will be visited by the group. WOMAN'S HIPS DISLOCATED WHEN CAR HITS ANOTHER Milford, Ia.—Special: When Jessie Northey stopped her car to investigate an obstruction in the road, a car driven by Earl Lawson, smashed into the rear of the Northey car, upsetting it and damaging his own car. Mrs. Lawson suffered the dislocation of both hips and the other occupants of the Lawson car were bruised and cut. Aside from broken windows, the Northey car was not damaged nor the occupants injured. BUENA VISTA COUNTY TO VOTE ON HIGHWAY BONDS Des Moines, Ia.—(AP)—Buena Vista, Hancock and Emmet counties on June 2 will vote on proposals to issued $2,680,000 worth of primary road bonds. Hancock, which will vote on a $400,000 issue, passed a $1,000,000 issue in 1919. The new issue, if approved, will provide funds for paving No. 15 across the county. Buena Vista will vote on a $1,500,000 issue, while Emmet will ballot on a $780,000 issue. Both rejected primary bonds at previous elections. SPIRIT LAKE MAN WINS RIGHT TO SELL LIQUOR Spirit Lake, Ia.—Special: In spite of much opposition by the W. C. T. U. and other organizations, Joe R. Bevins was granted a permit to buy, keep and sell intoxicating liquor in an adjourned session of court here. A petition with 700 signatures was circulated throughout the county by opposing interests as well as five attorneys representing the opposition. There is no other liquor permit in Galva Picnic Date Fixed Galva, Ia.—Special: On Thursday, the Galva community and farmers' picnic will be held at the park. Gov. Hammill will be the speaker. Several ball games have been arranged, including a game between the Galva team, and the Cherokee all-salaried team. A dance has been arranged for evening entertainment. The day's entertainment will be sponsored by the Business Men's club. Fort Dodge Bank Closes Fort Dodge, Ia.—(AP)—The Security Trust and Savings bank of Fort Dodge closed Monday and turned its affairs over to the state banking department. Officers said the action was due to a steady decrease in deposits, which had declined more than $200,000 in six months. The bank's deposits totaled $455,000. E. G. Larson is president and B. P. Larson is cashier. Rear Admiral Passes Away Dubuque, Ia.—(AP)—Rear Admiral Godfrey S. Blocklinger, 82, who was on the retired list of the United States navy, died in his apartment here. His rank entitles him to burial in the national cemetery, Washington, but at his own wish he will be buried in Dubuque, besides his wife, who died a month ago. SECOND DIVIDEND TO BE PAID SOON AVOCA BANK RECEIVER WILL DECLARE 25 PER CENT THIS MONTH. (Avoca.) According to information given by Arnold Blanchard, receiver of the defunct Peoples Savings bank here, a second dividend of 25 per cent will be declared in July, making total of 50 per cent in dividends to the depositors since the doors of the bank were closed six months ago. Depositors are expressing satisfaction with the way Mr. Blanchard is handling the affairs of the bank and it is anticipated that he will be able to make another pay ment of 25 per cent and possibly two before the close of the year, which will give the depositors practically 100 cents on the dellar within one year after the close of the institution.
