REINDEER MORE THAN PAY FOR ALASKA BUY Washington, D. C., Jan. 13.βDomesticated reindeer herds in Alaska are now worth $1,550,000 more than the United States paid to Russia in 1867 for the entire territory, the bureau of education announced in its annual report to the Secretary of the Interior. Natives own the majority of the reindeer which supply them with food, clothing and a livelihood. The industry has developed since 1892 when the bureau began to import the animals from Siberia. Plans are under way now the bureau report said, to establish co-operative marketing, so that reindeer products from the herds which are scattered thruout Alaska may be transported to market. The general consumption of reindeer meat thruout this country depends only on adequate transportation facilities, it was said. SHELL ROCK BANK CLOSES. Shell Rock, Ia., Jan. 13.βThe Farmers State bank of Shell Rock, capitalized at $25,000 closed its doors Monday following a run of depositors to withdraw funds. State examiners are now in charge. The bank was organized in 1907. F. C. Harmon is president.
