ONLY BANK IN OTERO COUNTY CLOSES DOORS First State of Alamogordo Hopes to Be Able to Resume Business; State's Money Protected Alamogordo, N. M., Nov. 15.β€”The First State Bank of Alamogordo, the only banking institution in Otero county, suspended business today pending examination of the accounts of the institution by a state examiner, now en route here. The closing of the bank came as a complete surprise. Officers of the institution had no intimation of it until last night, when, it was stated, a sudden demand was made upon it for financial obligations. A meeting of the Alamogordo Commercial club was called for late today, at which a conference was to be held with bankers expected to arrive from El Paso to discuss with local men prospects for reopening the bank. The First State bank of Alamogordo had a capital of $50,000 and a surplus of $5,000. Officers were J. W. Bennett, president; O. H. Henry, vice president; E. H. LeBreton, cashier. It was stated here today that officers and directors of the bank would sacrifice personal fortunes to protect the depositors, among whom are included the state, Otero county and hundreds of individuals. The bank was merged over a year ago with the other Alamogordo bank and the State bank of Cloudcroft. It was believed at the time that the merger had made a strong financial institution.
