Carroll School Semester Closes Plan Convocation Programs For Three WeeksβOther News Of Term. First semester of school closes this week in Carroll and examinations are to be given this Thursday with reports going out next week. In basketball at Concord Friday the local team lost by 9 to 5. Winside first and second teams came here Tuesday, and the local team plans to play the alumni Friday. Rev. C. F. Steiner addresses the high school in convocation this Friday. On January 19 a program to be given includes piano solos by Velma Williams, vocal solos by Lela Fisher, saxophone duets by Lucille Paulsen and Mabelle Jean Petersen. On January 26 three students will report on wonders in biology. Marjorie Golder withdrew from high school this week to move to Winside with her parents. Pupils not absent or tardy for six weeks will have a quarter holiday this Friday. With the new semester grammar will replace business arithmetic and agriculture will replace civics. Thomas Littleton returned to school this week after being ill. Eugene Littleton, who had an operation a few weeks ago, is also back. Biology class has been classifying specimens collected in the fall. Physics class is reviewing. Supt. C. L. Jiranek met with County Superintendent Pearl Sewell, Supt. E. A. Austin of Winside and Miss Maude Curley at Wayne Saturday to make changes in the county fair premium list, bringing these up to date. Supt. Jiranek is securing information in regard to starting an adult study center under the C. W. A. Such courses are offered where five or more wish the work and eight hours of college credit are given for the eight weeks of work. Officers of the glee clubs will hold over six weeks in the second semester on account of the club's organizing late. Intermediate Grades. Mabel Fredrickson returned to school Monday after several week's illness. Marjorie Littleton has not yet returned. In spelling the students have organized into groups, the Mayflower and Speedwell, for a contest with Dolores Cochran captain of the former and Elton Jenkins captain of the latter. Early in the week the Speedwells were in the lead. Losers in the spelling contest which closed entertained the winners Friday. Games were followed by refreshments. Primary Grades. Dorothy Sterling and Norma Otte who have been ill, were absent the first of the week. Gene Texley was absent Friday. Third graders took their first examinations this Thursday. All three grades have new readers and the first graders have new work books in connection. Second and third graders have had blackboard drills in division and subtraction. In Charge of Bank. W. R. Scribner, bank receiver at Winside and Hoskins, is in charge of the Carroll State bank. Drafts are being issued from Omaha to depositors for funds received after the bank was placed under limited operation. Goerge W. Beale, resident of Wayne county since 1888, died at his home a mile south of Carroll on Friday evening at 9:15 following several weeks' illness with dropsy and complications, aged 71 years, 4 months and 26 days. Funeral rites were conducted Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 from the Carroll Methodist church with Rev. C. F. Steiner in charge. Interment was in Carroll cemetery.
