GUARANTYFUND NOW MILLION AUDITORS SAY Amount Available on October 31 of $806,898.24 Supplemented by Payments 32 BANKS NATIONALIZE This Many Take Out National Charters Since Guaranty Law Is Effective "In our opinion the Depositors Guaranty fund has been properly accounted for on its records, and that all disbursements are consistent and in order and properly authorized and authenticated." This is the statement made by the Temple, Brissman Co., certified publie accountants at the conclusion of their audit report of the depositors guaranty fund made as of October 31, 1924. The report shows that on Oct. 31, last. the amount available for the purposes for which the fund was created was $806,898.24. This is exclusive of $204,661 due from closed banks in the state on deposits and assessments. No figures are given however as to the total liability of the fund to depositors in closed banks, this being beyond the province of the examination. Total Expenses The total expenses of the commission since its inception in 1917 to the date of the audit was $78,801.19. Of this $37,848.79 has been paid from legislative appropriation and the remaining $40,952 from the assessment fund. On October 31, 1924 the commission had on deposit in closed banks $112,966.29. A supplementary report shows that since the date of the audit $18,901.55 has been withdrawn. These deposits are divided among 16 closed institutions, the largest amount in any one bank being $21,398.39 in the defunct Williams County State Bank at Williston. There was also $21,515.26 on deposit in banks which were on the special deposit list on October 31, but of this $15,773.88 has been withdrawn since that date. Closed banks which still hold deposits of the guaranty fund are the Clyde State Bank, Bank of Cogswell, Farmers Bank of Dunn County, Dunn Center; Farmers State Bank of East Fairview, Sawyer State Bank, Williston State Bank, Farmers Bank of Garrison, State Bank of Grenora, Farmers Bank, Hampden; Security State Bank of Hanks, State Bank of Maxbass, Farmers State Bank of Nome, Farmers State Bank of Rawson, Farmers Bank of Ray, Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Sherwood, Tolley State Bank, Farmers State Bank of Watford City, Williams County State Bank of Williston. There was also due from these closed banks $89,303 on assessments to the guaranty fund, but $34,625 of this has been remitted by the state receiver since the date of the audit. In addition to these obligations there is the sum of $2,341.99 listed as notes receivable. These notes represent loans made to the receiver of the Farmers' and Merchants Bank of Robinson for receivership expenses. Intervene In Affairs It is shown in the audit report that the commission has intervened in the affairs of a number of closed banks in order to protect its interests. Some of these were as follows: The Sawyer State Bank had pledged collateral to secure certain loans. (Continued on page 4)

MIONTANA FARMERS HELP BUILD RAILWAY TO OPEN NEW EMPIRE TWICE SIZE OF RHODE ISLAND Strip of Canadian Townships Lying Along the Border Also to Be Brought in Touch with the World by the Construction of 50 Miles of Railroad. Scobey, Mont., July-Eight hundred farmers have chipped in $325,000 with the Great Northern Ry. to build 50 miles of railway extension and a new empire about twice the size of the state of Rhode Island is being opened in Montana. This line which will be extended west from Scobey, Mont., parelleling the Canadian boundary is to cost about $1,250,000. The farmers and few business men purchased $325,000 of Great Northern treasury stock at par and the Hill line will fur nish the balance of the money needed to build the line. This is the first time in the history of the Northwest that farmers have assisted in financing an exten sion line. These farmers have been hauling their grain to market in wag ons and motor trucks, some of them being obliged to travel 65 miles to sell their products. Five new towns will be established in this new domain and each of these towns will draw grain, live stock and other farm products from about 15 town. ships, representing areas that equal the size of the average Minnesota or Iowa counties. Twenty miles of this new railway will be completed this fall and the rest will be built next year. Considerable area in Canada also will be served by this railway extension By next year when the road is completed, it is estimated an additional million and a half busheis of wheat will be marketed from this section. Most of the wheat raised in this upper region of Montana is eager ly sought by Eastern millers because of unusually high protein content, and it is sold on the market at a premium of 15 cents or more per bushel above ordinary wheat. The new empire which the extension of this line will open 18 one of the most dependable wheat regions on the North American continent un. der the summer fallow system of agriculture. There are about 1,500,000 virgin acres that will be cultivated support this new railway ex tension The townsites are to be put on sale in September and plans are under why to build the most modern towns architects can design The new stock holders consist of about 95 per cent farmers and 5 per cent small town business men. For years the farmers of Daniels and Valley counties lying next to the Canadian boundary have sought a branch line of the Great Northern Railway, but the war came on and the building of extension was of course out of the question. Then, when the railways finally were turned back to private control, the Great Northern Railway found itself with the rest of the lines of the United States, occupied entirely with rehabilitating its main line system. So these Montana farmers had to go on hauling their products to by wagon and motor trucks. But these tillers of the soll kept persistently at it, maintaining a regular railway committee and importuning the Great Northern officials to build them.a line. Finally the Great Northern announced that if the farmers of the two commodious Montana counties would absorb worth of stock the line would be built. The farmers loosened their purse strings so quickly that they immediately oversubscribed this sum by $75,000 and they are jubilant because the line is going through what they regard as the best winter wheat belt in Ameri- By October it will be built to the coming town of Peerless, which by that time will be partly erected and there on the frontier waiting for the railway to come up to it. Next year the remaining 30 miles of rail will be laid to the terminal town of Opheim, which also will become reality before the new railway catches up with J. V. Bennett, of Scobey. diligent director of the frontier farmers persistent petition for railway declares the most unusual feature of this stock sale to these farmers the fact that they readily acquiesced to the regulations which made manda. tory for the Great Northern Railway to sell its treasury stock to them at par, $100 per share. These particular farmers are said to have more first hand knowledge of the railway situa tion than even a great many of big manufacturing shippers, they have been studying it 80 long and faithfully. The fact that Great Northern stock could have been bought by them on Wall Street for $69.00 a share at the time, only a passing incident to them for their committee's investigation of the railway conditions showed that this same stock has an asset valuation considerably over par and they declare their added production in the new region will make it still more valuable Farmers in other sections of Montana already are contemplating fol lowing this plan of aiding the rail way in building branch lines tapping rich frontier sections of the state. lands and premises and every part thereof, and for other and further relief as will more fully appear by plaintiff's complaint on file in this action, copy of which is herewith served upon you and reference to which is hereby made for further particulars.
