THOUGHTLESS GOSSIP ANNOYS SOUND BANK Just because there was some thoughtless, and unfounded, talk a small run was promoted against the Farmers and Mechanics Bank of Osawatomie Tuesday. And, just because that bank is a mighty sound institution the run had little or no effect. Incidentally it might be stated here that the state laws make it a penitentiary offense when one circulates stories that cause a run on a bank. Officials of the Osawatomie bank are trying to fix the authorship of the story that caused them annoyance. The Farmers and Mechanics bank never was stronger than it now is. The deposits on Monday night were $658,988.51 and the cash and sight exchange totaled $114,000, or more than twice the amount the bank is required to carry. People in Osawatomie have confidence in the bank. This is evidenced by the fact that the attempt to cause depositors to withdraw accounts only resulted in withdrawal of less than $5,000 in funds. The Farmers and Mechanics bank is ably officered with Walter Barnes, the cashier, actively in charge, Dr. F. A. Carmichael, chairman of the board; L. B. Maynard, president; Chas. W. Cook, vice-president; Eldon Brown and Geo. W. Hill, assistant cashiers. Directors are H. H. Rede, L. B. Maynard, D. O. Ouellet, G. W. Hill, C. W. Cook, Dr. F. A. Carmichael and Walter Barnes.
