The Ainsworth is a United States depository. No statement was made of the condition of the Portland Savings bank. It has a capital stock of $260,000 with surplus of $220,000. CUTTING DOWN FORCES. WALTHHAM, Mass., July 29.-The Waltham Watch company's foreman was interviewed by the president today and given instructions as to re. ducing the working forces. In some cases this will be a cut of 50 per cent. In all 1500 will be thrown out of work. Letters received today from the Elgin factory report the situation even worse than Waltham. Sixteen hundred watchmakers will be laid off August 1 and the pay roll will be reduced one-half. The concern is all right financially, having a surplus of $1,000,000 undivided profits. In the discharge of hands as far as possible those will be retained who have families and the ones dis charged will be taken on whenever business prospects warrant. WANT A RECEIVER. PITTSBURG, July 29.-An application was made in the United States circuit court today by Treasurer Luther Park for the appointment of a receiver for the New York, Lake Erie and Western railroad as a supplement to the bill filed recently in New York. Johnยฎ King and John S. McCullough were appointed receivers. RUN ON A SAVINGS BANK. NEWARK, July 29.- There was a run today on the Howard Savings institution of this city. Officers of the bank say they have plenty of money on hand to pay all demands. AN OHIO SAVINGS BANK. AKRON, July 29.-The Citizens Savings and Loan association of this city closed this morning. Cause, a constant drain upon the resources by drawing out deposits. The bank is regarded as perfectly solvent. Capital stock $100,000 with $80,000 surplus. IN RECEIVER'S HANDS. EUCLAIRE, Wis., July 29.-The Commercial bank, capital $50,000, has been placed in the hands of Byron A. Buffil as receiver. TO FORECLOSE MORTGAGE. ST. PAUL, July 29.-The Metropolitan Trust company of New York has brought suit to for. close a mortgage for $3,220,000 on the Wisconsin, Minnesota and Pacific railroad, operated by the Minneapolis and St. Louis railway. Default of $600,000 in interest is charged. AN ILLINOIS BANK CLOSES. KANKAKEE, Ill., July 29.-The First National bank of this city failed to open its doors this morning. A steady withdrawal of funds and inability to realize on paper was the cause. Assets sufficient to pay depositors in full. RECEIVER APPOINTED. CHICAGO, July 29.-The Wolf Lake Distilling company of Hammond, Ind., has been placed in the hands of a receiver. Liabilities, $100,000; assets about $200,000. RUN ON A TRENTON BANK. TRENTON, N. J., July 29-A run commenced this morning on the Trenton Savings bank. The bank is one of the strongest in the state, having a clean surplus of $288,000. SAFE COMPANY ASSIGNS. HAMILTON, O., July 29 -The MacNeale & Urban Safe and Lock company, assigned today. Assets, $160,000; liabilities unknown. Heavy Rain in the Southwest. Special to The Statesman.
