RANKIN QUIT AS BANK RECEIVER Sees Loss For Jefferson City Depositors. JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn., June 1 (Spl.)—After investigation the condition of the affairs of the Mossy Creek bank, which closed its doors here last Monday, C. T. Rankin, president of the First National bank of Jefferson City, who was named receiver by the state banking department, has refused to serve. In his place E. F. Smith, of Morristown, has been named as liquidating agent, and E. R. Taylor, also of Morristown, as attorney, these two being in charge of the bank. Mr. Rankin expressed the view that depositors would not receive more than 60 or 65 per cent of their money unless protected by personal bonds, as in the case of Jefferson City. This is his estimate if the real estate on which the bank holds mortgages nets as much as JUROR BRIBER GETS 5 YEARS "Go-Between" In Liggegtt Mistrial Avoids Stand. NASHVILLE, June 1 (AP).—Rainey M. Creswell, "Go-between" in the second mistrial of Walter Liggett, alleged murderer of Tuney Cunningham, was sentenced to serve not more than five years in the penitentiary when found guilty of bribery by a jury in criminal court here today. The jury received the charge from Judge Chester K. Hart shortly after noon, and returned the verdict within a few minutes. The trial was marked by unusually brief testimony, Creswell not taking the stand. The only evidence offered by the defense was for the "good character and reputation" of the defendant.
