Department Markers Form to Be Changed Washington, Dec. 30.βThe familiar iron pipe with the brass head used to mark section corners for the surveys of the general land office, the reclamation bureau and the geologic survey, in use since 1907, will soon give way to a new form of metal post that will last from 50 to 75 years if experiments being conducted prove satisfactory. The post being used at present lasts for only a few years due to corrosion. It will not resist rust, is hard to transport, it is too rigid and cannot withstand rough handling or malicious destruction according to the officials conducting the tests. The materials which are being considered for the new markers include iron coated with zinc and cadmium; steel coated with copper or bronze; alloys coated with copper aluminum, manganese bronze, or silicon steel; and copper.
