MICHIGAN ITEMS. John Oatley, Lansing, a member of the grand jury which indicted Frank P. Glazier, was drawn on the petit jury which will try Glazier. The trial will begin about September 28. While working on a clover huller on the upper farm' in Lamotte township, Matthew Warner, of Almont, was caught in the machine and instantly killed. He leaves a widow and eight children. Fire which started in the plant of the Hudson Creamery Co., in Cadmuth, Saturday morning, totally destroyed the structure; loss, $2,000. The company had just purchased the plant and had occupied it only four days. Believing the mayor would see that they were not prosecuted, 14 Saginaw saloonkeepers took his word and remained open until 12 instead of 11 o'clock. They were arrested by order of the police commissioners and bound over to circuit court. Assistant Quartermaster General Rogers left for Camp Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, to prepare for the encampment of the M. N. G. there. The first field artillery of Lansing and Mason has been ordered to attend target practice at Sparta, Wis., September 14. Despite the fact that officials had raised $20,000 on outstanding loans. a receiver was decided upon in circuit court Thursday for the Athens State & Savings bank. Attorneys for the bank opposed a receiver, but they were fought by Assistant Attorney General Chase and Banking Commissioner Zimmerman. Frank Wolf, vicer president of the Central National bank of this city, was named as receiver. A 5-inch hat pin was removed from the stomach of the 15-months-old daughter of James McQueen, of Brimley, and she may recover. The child stumbled while the pin was in her mouth and swallowed it.

# REPORT SHOWS THAT BANKS # ARE IN GOOD CONDITION Annual Statement of State Banking Commissioner Zimmerman Given to the Public-Twenty-six New State Banks. In his annual report rendered to Gov. Warner Monday, State Banking Com- missioner H. M. Zimmerman gives a full and detailed account of the bank- ing institutions in Michigan for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 1909. The report shows that his force of examin- ers have made a careful investigation into the condition of the various de- positories, and find that as a whole the banks are in first-class condition. During the past year 26 new state banks have been organized and the capital stock of ten state depositories has been increased to the amount of $345,000. This, with the increase of $345,000, and the $35,000 caused by the restoration to stockholders by receivers of the Ath- ens State and Savings bank, and the Springport State Savings bank, makes the total increase for the year $1,060,- 000. Deducting the loss of banking capital growing out of the liquidation and consolidation of banks amounting to $550,000, the net increase is $510,000. The total number of depositors in the 376 state banks and 99 national banks on Dec. 1, 1909, amounted to $1,- 024,450. The total deposits amounted to $330,520,039.11.
