The bank directors voluntarily suspended business and turned the institution over to a state bank examiner. No reason for the action was given. The bank had deposits of approximately $275,000. FAILS TO OPEN SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP)β€”Closing of the Pope county state bank at Golconda for examination and adjustment was announced today. The bank was capitalized at $50,000. The first of this year the bank had total deposits of $314,216.41. Loans totaled $244,286.79. PARIS, ILL., FAILURE PARIS, Ill. (AP)β€”The First National bank at Paris, Ill., failed to open its doors today. There was a run on the bank last Friday. B. H. Pennell, president, did not issue a statement. The bank had capital stock of $50,000. PRESIDENT IS MISSING BINGHAMTON, N. Y. (AP)β€”The affairs of Andrew J. Horvatt, president of the state bank of Binghamton, missing since the doors of the institution were closed yesterday, was the object of inquiry today from three sources. The state banking department, searching out the exact amount of a shortage unofficially reported to be about $600,000 was one of the investigators. Federal officers became interested upon learning that Horvatt was the supreme treasurer of a fraternal insurance organization and the officers of that organization, the Greek Catholic union, arrived to check their accounts. The exact shortage, state bank examiners said, might not be determined until early next week. Depositors were largely laborers.
