THURSDAY, JULY 12, 1923 At ElDorado one day recently, some news boys were crying "Extra, Extra!" in selling some special issues. A man asked what the "extra" was about and the boy, with a grin, said, "Oh, the Citizens State Bank has failed!" The extra was really concerning the resignation of two members of the County Board over the poorhouse scandal, but the boy's joke about the bank almost started a run on the bank's funds, as several depositors slipped in and called for their money. Of course they were promptly paid, and then as is always the case they didn't want their money. It sometimes doesn't take much to start a panic that will wreck an institution. Steve Frazier of Sedan, who is interested in the Beaty gasser on 30-31-11, feels pretty good over the find. It is in heretofore undeveloped quarter, and quite a way from proven territory. The well while not a prodigy in any way, is strong enough to be a paying investment, and the fact that oil was found at several depths as well as the gas, at least two million feet, makes it a promising adventure. Further drilling will follow at once, and other leaseholders in near-by territory are moving for immediate development. Arthur S. McNay, editor and publisher of the Galena Daily and Weekly Republican, did himself proud in his recent historical edition of the Weekly Republican, a 60-page magazine shaped publication on book paper, and profusely illustrated. It is full of historical and biographical matter, besides giving an immense amount of statistics and valuable information concerning the mining and manufacturing industries of Galena and Cherokee county.
